This page used to be for community battles but since nobody ever updated me on their battles I got rid of it! So now this page will be reserved for tactics that work/don't work against Wal-Mart. Have you fought a battle in AZ against Wal-Mart? What has worked for you? What did not work? Send me your comments at stopazwalmarts at yahoo dot com
For example: Avondale
Contributed to success?
- Most public meetings are attended by just myself and perhaps a few others. The Wal-Mart meetings brought out over 100 citizens. There IS power in numbers!
- Wal-Mart needed a change (or update) in zoning so we had some room. If no zoning change was needed we probably would not have won.
- A developer wanted to put a 4-star hotel on an adjacent property but likely would have backed out if Wal-Mart would have been next door! ECONOMICS!
- This website and my letters to the editor? Who knows.
Likely was no help?
- References to traffic never seems to help. Board members and Council members respond with "there will be traffic with anything". Unless you have hard facts to back up your statement I would not suggest using the traffic aspect.
- The newspaper - I found only one local newspaper willing to talk to me about what I was trying to do. One reporter seemed to back Wal-Mart with most of her stories.
