Arizonan's United Against Wal-Mart

NEW INFORMATION! 11/22/06 — In August 2005 Kitchell Development Co. proposed to put a Wal-Mart shopping center at the north-west corner of Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street. However, due to community opposition Kitchell pulled the application and it never made it to Council.

On this very page I warned people to pay attention to the northwest corner of Avondale Boulevard (115th Avenue) and McDowell Road (see my "possible locations" list below from last year). Well I was close because Wal-Mart is claiming the SOUTHWEST CORNER OF AVONDALE BOULEVARD AND MCDOWELL ROAD (see the news story in the Arizona Republic).

Just because they have the zoning does not mean there is nothing we can do. Research using this web page and get community support. I found out about this because an all-knowing person MAILED letters to area residents informing them of this plan. The same day I learned about it through a friend that received this letter the above story was printed in the Arizona Republic. Use the media, use the mail, use other sources around the country (ie wake-up walmart, sprawl-busters, etc.) and GET YOUR NEIGHBORS INVOLVED.

I sent Al Norman of Sprawl-Busters the story and he suggested people go to walmartwatch.com/battlemart, then click on "battle plan" then open "Battlemart 101."

POSSIBLE LOCATIONS — I know Wal-Mart all too well and eventually I expect them to try again. According to the City of Avondale General Plan there are several potential locations Wal-Mart could choose ... and unfortunately some of these would not require rezoning (rezoning is easier to fight). Please watch these locations CLOSELY! for activity:
  • SE corner of Avondale Blvd/McDowell Rd
  • SW corner of Avondale Blvd/McDowell Rd
  • NW corner of 107th Avenue/Van Buren St
  • Dysart Rd south of Van Buren St (not sure exactly where)
  • SE corner of Indian School Road/Dysart Rd
  • NW corner of El Mirage Rd/Indian School Rd

Please watch the northwest corner of 115th Avenue (Avondale Blvd) and McDowell Road. At the March 20th Avondale City Council Meeting the City Council approved a rezoning from AG to PAD. In the presentation staff said retail up to 100,000 sq ft could be built in this development. Wal-Mart can be 100,000 sq ft!
